05 SAIGON – 10AM Local Food Market (720 MINS Pt. IIb/IV)

“…This photo series (720 Minutes), which serves as a 12 hour timeline when viewed together, is broken into five parts of what my typical day was like in Saigon: (1) 8AM early morning walk at my grandma’s neighbourhood; (2a)(2b) 10AM grocery shopping at the local market with my aunt; (3) 1PM buying gifts for relatives back home in Canada; (4) 2-8PM running the home restaurant at night.”
This is the open restaurant section of the Chu Thu Do Market. Pick a seat on those plastic chairs and someone will come up to you and ask you what would you like. Sometimes you may even individually pick out your ingredients such as the weight or cut of your meats.
After half an hour of grocery shopping, it was time for lunch. We sat down at a wonton/noodle vendor and had my aunt’s usual comfort food – shrimp and wonton soup
Lunch is served.
We both ended up ordering the same soup. They were freshly made out of the large soup pots
A vendor selling a cold dessert called “Che” which is made from a mixture of coconut milk, grass jellies, red beans, mung beans, and sometimes fruits
This super warm vendor lady told me to tell the online community that her dessert here is the best. That is now what I must do.
Peaking through the canopies, you can see the residences up top. I wouldn’t be surprised if all these vendors lived in this block.
Down below, the marketplace chaos ensues.
Salting fish is a very common practice in Vietnam and can be found in a typical Vietnamese market. Salt not only adds to the flavouring of the fish but it also slows down bacterial growth, allowing them to be preserved much longer. This was ideal in the past before the invention of the refrigerator and has ultimately shaped several dishes around the world.
There’s something so cool about these vendors. They all don’t mind being photographed!
Picking out the last few items on her list
After an hour, it was time to head back to my grandmother’s place. This is how the locals transport all their goods around town.

I’m still amazed by how my aunt was able to transport all that plus my extra weight from behind.
Time to head home. Heading through District 5 of Saigon past these beautiful tall trees.
